Tuesday chainey - an off and parking the bus

Another good turnout last night on a windy night. Sam Wood ended up in the hedge somewhere around Farmer Teds. Looks like he got scratched up but no major injuries.cryingHope you are not too sore today.

The bus at the Scarisbrick pub turn gave Gareth and I a two man breakaway, must check the timetable for next weekwink

There was some confusion with riders sitting out turns at the back. There were some very clear shouts of UP, but it was difficult to know whether the shout was aimed at you or somebody else. I was looking over my shoulder even when there was still a string of riders behind me. How do we solve this?

Ride slower!!! laugh ......i couldnt believe last night...popped at Q!!!! surprise....i try and shout the name of the person in front i want to go up 'Up ste'....but if you dont know their name its tough.

The easiest way to solve the issue is to not shout 'UP' and keep rolling through! As they say, pain is just weakness leaving the body, so grit your teeth and watch out for those buses! ;o) On a more serious note though, I hope Sam is ok and no damage to him or his bike! Next week I'll be wearing yellow to rub in the win! I'll donate my green jersey to Steve for his motivational dragging of myself to the line! ;o)

Good chainey last night on the long loop out to Southport, with a very well played win for Gareth with Steve D as his wingman.  I'm still convinced that bus never had its indicator on, but the three cars behind it going straight was the real cause of the split.  I lead the group round in chase, but it was a case of trying to reel the two of you back without going into the red so I'd still have something left if it went to a sprint.  This was working but I was running out of road and all I was doing was dragging the whole group back to you with the 'thanks' of just being swallowed up when they jumped off my wheel.  At 'Bye Ln' I knew I had to go harder so told Sean I was going to kick and hang on, as it would of been nice to be part of the win by slingshoting him up to you.  We went and I think that snapped the elastic with the rest of the group, as no one bar Sean at the end came round me when I sat up as Garath crossed the line.  On the plus side it was close.  From the house at 'Bye Ln' to the finish we took another 10 seconds out of you both over a 57 second segment to close the gap to 25 meters, but in the end it just wasn't enough.....  On another note, sorry to hear about Sam having an 'off', hope it wasn't to bad and you don't feel to sore today.

On the subject of the shouts of 'UP' coming from the rear of the group brought up.  I've got no problem with someone who is having a bad day taking a break from their turn.  But the confusion really came for me in Ainsdale with the shouts of 'UP' coming all the time, and looking round and seeing riders riding side by side behind me.  When you look over your shoulder and see this, it appears as if the riders on the outside are moving up, just slower.  So I waited for them to come passed, then heard 'UP' again, I looked again and realised they were just riding side by side.  I then had to push into the red to make up 5-6 bike lengths to get back on the pace line.  I think if your going to miss turns at the back and theres more than one, single out so we know its us your shout at for the "UP", that way it looks clear for us to move out.

Sam was in school today with a few scratches on his face.  I wondered if he'd had an off as I'd been dropped (obviously) by Farmer Ted's, indeed about 15 miles beforehand.  I was looking back at last year's times and even though I rode from before the Morris Dancers on my own (my first rule of the chainey - when you get dropped you have to do the whole thing on your own - it's a good disincentive) the time was equivalent to some of last year's early ones - must have been quite quick for those who stuck on.

Next week I'll try to stick it out a bit longer.

It was quite a quick night despite the wind and the slightly ragged line at times. Last week my average was 23.5mph, last night was 24.2mph.smiley The fastest last year was 25.4mph which was also a night when we got a lot of green lights.

Thank you all for checking up on me, honestly I'm fine, think I was very lucky considering the speed I was going and the fact the bush decided to catch me, a few cuts to the face and left shoulder, probably won't be out until sunday, but yeah, very lucky. Thanks to everyone who helped me up, certainly helped me raise my spirits :)
