The other Other A group Sunday ride

Given the amount of people at the shop this Sunday it was inevitable that there would be a fair amount of group choice. The A group somewhat split into 2, the fit and uninjured and the recovering injury and illness / fancied an earlier return ride.

I have to say at this point, some of the B Group who went with Steve W could have easily ridden with us. Managing a large group is difficult, and Steve does this with remarkable equanimity, and despite the inevitable protestations I will face for saying this, a large group annoys the hell out of some drivers.

So it was with surprise/ comfort that 8 of us set off in the recovering A group. A simple loop down through Maghull, through Thornton, And the curves up to Formby. Here, Dave Atkinson navigated the back lanes and nearly finished with 7 bikes up his rear due to a wrong turn. However, he was soon back on track round Formby golf course and up to the coast road- we opted not to do the full coast road, to avoid what we presumed would be a busy section, so aimed for marine drive and joined it there.

Here Ralph couldn't let Charlie pass at speed so for a while the two A-groups merged in a run up to the roundabout at Banks. Despite my efforts, and phlegm, I couldn't outrun the hoards. The groups then divided again and the 8 continued up to Tarleton before heading straight down the A59 to the cafe. Pace went up a little and the front changed hands several times as a series of "upping the effort, stay with me" challenges were laid down.

All 8 made it to the cafe, and for the first time in god knows how long, were the first ones there. Cake for some, eggs, toast for others, water for the dieters (Stephen)! And 40 miles done. Home via Hoscar Moss and all stayed together until Inder went off to the Beacon and the dark Lane hill began. A great ride, great weather, and a great bunch who all shared the work whilst keeping it on the fast side of steady. Tagged a few extra miles on with Paul to take it to 50 miles for me and back for -1230. Result all round

A really enjoyable ride. With just the eight of us in the group, it helped to keep things tight and together. A nice flat ride lead to, as Simon says, a slightly more pacy ride which I was feeling a little on my stint on the front from Formby up until Banks lol. Great day and great company all round, that's what HMCC is all about! (And I didn't fall off!!!!!)

I'm bad and that's good. I will never be good and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be, than me. (Wreck-It Ralph, 2012)
