Great Dun Fell - Sunday 17th May

on Mon, 27/04/2015 - 09:08

This trip is the next one up on the calendar so time to get organised.

The route will be the same as last year (thanks to Neil Poll) but we will go clockwise, the other way around to last year.

Starting in Kendal it is 85 miles and 8,000ft of climbing. Starting with Shap Fell, then Great Dun Fell, cafe in Appleby, back to Kendal.

Great Dun Fell is unique and you really need to ride it. A dead end road up to a radar station, restricted for cars so pretty much traffic free. A 4.5 mile climb of 2,100ft with an awesome descent.

We will ride as a group, the distance and climbing will dictate a sensible pace.

Meet in Ormskirk at the car park next to the bus station ready to leave by 6.30am.

Arrive at Castle Drive, Kendal, LA9 7BN for 8.00am, there is a car park next to the football ground.

Sort bikes and kit, leave at 8.30am.

Estimated times, about 5.5/6 hours riding, total 7/7.5 hours back to Kendal would be 3.30/4.00pm.

Who is up for it?

I have space for two more riders and bikes.

Link to the route on Mapometer. It would be good to have more than one Garmin with the route on.

http://gb.mapometer.com/cycling/route_4071651.html

According to this map it is only 83 miles and a mere 6,690 ft of climbing!

Deffo in Steve, missed out last year so can't wait to give it a go.

Am I OK to tag along in your car Steve?

Howie

great ride last year on a standard chainset, looking forward to enjoying it even more on a compact lol. Oh the pain!

I'm bad and that's good. I will never be good and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be, than me. (Wreck-It Ralph, 2012)

This is how I would download it to my Garmin 705.

Connect your Garmin to your computer. Follow the link to the route on Mapometer. On the left hand side of the screen are 'Controls', one of which is 'Export to GPS', click on this.

A window will open, choose 'Route' and then 'Save'. This will save the route in to the 'Downloads' folder on your laptop.

Open the downloads folder on your computer and right click on the Great Dun Fell file. On the options choose 'Send to' and then you should see 'Garmin(H):'. Choose this and the file will download to your Garmin. Once it has downloaded you will need to eject your Garmin from the taskbar at the bottom of your screen. Ejecting it will ensure the data is not corrupted.

Once it has been ejected I would then open the Garmin and check it has downloded ok by opening the file.

That is how it works for me, good luckyes

Any chance of grabbing the last place in you're car Paul,

Thanks Paul B.

Mayo1's picture

Cheers Steve. When you say Computer. Does that include an I-pad?

stevedepport's picture

Don't know but I am still using the previous generation Garmin 705. I have only ever used a computer to download routes.

Anyone else help?

Paul H's picture

Sos Paul but Colin Clarke has taken the remaining place in my car.

I'm sure there will be other people traveling up with space in there car.

Steve me and Chris Cooke would like to tag onto to this ride , i realise you fast boys will be going a bit quicker than us ,but if you got us to the start of the climb i am pretty sure we could crack the climb at our pace

stevedepport's picture

Dave, you are welcome to come along. If the difference in pace is too great it would be useful to know one of you had a garmin so we could split if we needed to.

dangerousdave's picture

Steve ,we can take a view on the pace during the ride , i only have a basic garmin which does not have a map facility , but i think we will be okay getting back using a map and my phone has a map facility ,

Time to finalise the details for Sunday. At the moment I know we have the following riders confirmed via this thread -

Car 1 - me, Howie W & Inder

Car 2 - John Lynch, DNA Dave, Garry L

Car 3 - Paul H, Colin Clarke, Mike Mayo

Not sure about transport for the following but confirmed-

Paul B, James Gerrie, Dangerous Dave & Chris Cooke. On Strava Darren Prout has also confirmed he is coming. In total that would be 14 riders, which would be a nice size for a group. Dangerous & Chris are going to see how they are with the pace but will be happy to ride without the group if they feel they are holding everyone up too much. (Dave, I have done a printed map for you as well).

If anyone else fancies a more B group pace I am sure Dangerous and Chris would welcome the company but please let me know on the forum if you are coming.

My contact number is 07753 496966 in case you need to contact me before or during the ride. Remember that riding in Cumbria might mean poor, or no phone reception in some areas.

This is a good but tough day out. The profile is skewed by having Great Dun Fell in the middle. Everywhere in the Lakes is up or down. We start within 2 miles of leaving Kendal by going up Shap Fell. Compared to Great Dun Fell on the profile it look nothing but it is a 9 mile climb but generally fairly steady. The route back in to Kendal on the way back is also very lumpy as we found when we rode out that way on last years ride.

Unless I hear from anyone else on the forum or by contacting me on the phone I am working on the numbers/riders above. If you are planning on coming but haven't declared yourself yet then I need you to do so. The day out takes some planning and planning for 24 is different from planning for 14, so help me out.

The weather will also have a say, maybe the final say. At the moment the forecast looks a bit changeable and all of the hills can be pretty exposed, particularly when you get over 2,500ft on Great Dun Fell. I will post here on Saturday night if I am going to give it a miss because of the forecast.

Hopefully see you all on Sunday.

boltsy74's picture

Think i've managed to wangle the car off the mrs for the day, so i'm defo in, and can take 1 more+bike if needed.

dangerousdave's picture

Steve

i think me and Chris will be travelling in the same car , i have down loaded a map of your Garmin link so we have a good idea of the route so we should be okay finding our way round it looks  straight forward on the map ,maybe we can keep up with you A boys for part of the route ,but we can sort this on the day ,See You  6 30 Sunday

gerriejames's picture

i also have snaffled the wife's car so have room for 3 others without bikes or one plus bike (a Zafira is horrendous for bike transport)

AlanTee's picture

I'm planning on coming on this ride ste.

I should also be driving up there however I might meet you at the car park in Kendal for 8:30 (i'll confirm saturday evening).

Al

I'm up for this. Will be driving up with Steve Williams. See you at 6:30

stevedepport's picture

I am going to have to drop out of the ridesad I was in an accident on the M6 ysterday, nobody was injured but my car ir written off. The airbags and seatbelt did their jobs but my chest is pretty sore. I am going to be too sore to ride.

I was taking Howie & Inder. I have let Howie know but don't have a contact number for Inder. If you have a contact number can you let him know or text me his number to 07753 496966.

I am going to call in the shop later to have a chat about Sunday anyway.

Gutted to have to miss out but know I have been lucky yesterday.

stevedepport's picture

Darren Prout is making his own way to Kendal and will see you at the car park there at 8.00am. His contactr number is 07843 092161.

D N A's picture

Hope you're not too sore Steve. The forecast is pretty grim for Sunday anyway. I was going to suggest a rethink and put it off to another day. It's a long way to go just to get soaking wet and blown about all day. Let's wait till the heatwave arrives, it's on it's way.....promise! I'll be at the shop as normal for 9 on Sunday.

I'm bad and that's good. I will never be good and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be, than me. (Wreck-It Ralph, 2012)

stevedepport's picture

Just checked the BBC forecast now for Appleby which is stating '8-10C,early shgowers giving way to thicker cloud & rain, 14-16mph winds'. The top of Great Dun Fell is 2,000 higher than Appleby which would mean a drop to about 4-6C and if you factor in winchill could be 0C or even down to -1 to -6C.

I am not going  anyway but if I was going as the leader of the group you have to make a call based on taking some responsbibilty for everyone's comfort and safety. My decision right now would be to call it off and look at another week. I am going to the last match of the season on Sunday 24th so if I would then be suggesting riding on Saturday 23rd.

What does anyone think? I appreciate people have booked time off, used up brownie points, sorted leave, etc and everyone is free to make their own call.

Inder's picture

Fully agree with Dave and Steve's latest comments. It'll be pretty grim up on the fells, not the best day to be hanging around at 2000ft! Save it for another time when the forecast is better and Steve is fit again? I'll be at the shop for a normal Sunday ride. Inder
Mayo1's picture

Get well soon Steve, that's the most important thing. Please don't do The Dunn on 23/05/15 as I'm on holiday. Shop at 9am for me too by the looks of it. Anyone fancy getting 'a Ton' in with a nice cafe stop somewhere...DNA, Inder?

Inder's picture

Sounds good to me Mayo. Inder
