Fancy riding a big chunk of stage 1 of the TdF?

I saw a route in Cycling Plus starting/ending in Skipton that takes in a big chunk of stage 1. It follows stage 1 from Skipton to Ripon, then leaves it at Ripon to head back to Skipton.

115m(186k) with 7588ft(2313m) climbing.

The route includes all the climbs of the stage, Cote de Cray cat 4, Cote de Buttertubs cat 3, Cote de Griton Moor cat 3.

Cafe stop at the half way point in Grinton.

Skipton is an hour and twenty minutes drive away, aim to get there 8.30, ready to set off at 9am.

How about 20th July, who else fancies it?

Thanks Craig looks like I'm in! Are you planning to meet up with the others at the car park near the shop?

Going to pick Paul up at about 6.30 in Burscough and go from there so we can carry a change of clothes etc if needed.  Depending where you are, happy to pick you up before/after that or at the car park at say 6.15

I'm in Skem so I'll meet you at the shop 6.15 to save you the extra driving around, happy to get there earlier if needs be...

Been looking forward this all summer. I'm jumping in with Sean N......or at least that has been the plan for a while. Can't wait. See you Sunday, and hopefully tomorrow night if I get off work on time

I had arranged for Mayo and Howie to jump in with me in the van. If it ends up there's extra space Sunday morning in the car park we can always rearrange.

Hi Steve, silly question but what time do you think you be getting back into Ormskirk???smiley

stevedepport's picture

Jeff, difficult to say but here goes anyway. If we set off from Skipton at 8.30am, average 15mph for the 105 miles, then that is 7 hours on the bike plus 1 hour for a cafe stop, total 8 hours. This would get us back to Skipton for 4.30pm and then about 1.5 hours home, back to Ormskirk about 6.00pm.

All a bit approximate but the best I can do.

I still have space in my car and will be in the car park a 6.15 with room for a bike and rider, maybe 2.

Hi Craig Are you still ok to pick me up Sunday morning 6.30am? If so, the house number is 183. It's 200 yards on the left after the M6 turn off. Paul H

I'll be there at the car park near the shop at 6.15. Can take one other person + bike in my car, or happy to jump in with someone else if there is space.

Thanks for organising that treacherous ride Steve. Can't believe how undulating Yorkshire is and some of them uncategorised climbs where absolute killers. Quite enjoyed that last climb considering we thought all the ascents had finished but there where some choice words coming out of Howie's mouth when we took that right turn to see that picturesque but very steep scenery in the background. Thanks again Steve and can't wait for the next one. Paul H

Some great climbs over the day, including a few extras that weren't part of the top 4. Three were from the TDF stage 1 plus we tackled Greenhow Hill, longer and tougher than anything the TDF went over in Yorkshire! One up for the HMCC boys.

Inder accelerated away from the bunch on one climb and as he went around the bend towards what he thought would be the summit you could just hear him groan "Oh no, it doesn't end there!" Apart from that attack Clay and Sam shared the KOM points all day.

Loads of stuff still on the route from the TDF but two stuck in my mind. The first was a very long message written aross the road, word by word so you had to keep reading as you climbed, "Better to have ridden in Yorkshire and lost, than never to have ridden in Yorkshire". The other was a very neatly painted message, obviously took the artist some time to do "Go Frome"..........was it a spelling mistake or was the Frome tourist board trying to get some publicity?

Ian had the days only puncture, 2minutes 30 seconds, which gave us time to try out one of the many yellow bikes on the route. I am sure there are some photos out there somewhere.

John Lynch, or should that be belt & braces Lynch, doubles the weight of his bike with all of the devices he carries. Still if one Gamin packs up, you will need the second and if that one should get struck by lightning you will need.....etc, etc.

We did have a couple of elderly stalkers in a car who passed us a least 6 times and also turned up at the cafe. In the whole day we were never abused by a single motorist, they waited patiently behind us, they stopped to let us through or out at junctions and that must have been a legacy from the tour.

Even when it rained, and when it did it stung when it hit bare skin, it did not stop us from having great day playing out on our bikes. I have sent some pictures to Dan to set up a gallery, if you have any let him have them.
