HMCC Big Day Out - 22nd April

I am planning a day out in April up to the Eastern Lakes to take on Great Dun Fell and Hartside. I will confirm the route in the next week but looking at driving up to Tebay area then heading to Appleby to take on GDF, then north to conquer Hartside - cafe stop then head back to the cars. This is aimed at A riders and strong B riders - it's a day out so A riders will need to rein it in a bit and B riders will have to push on - it will be lumpy and both climbs are tough. I will post a route up shortly.

Risking the ire of Mr Depport - this ride will only run if the weather is clear and dry - it will be a full day out and some of descents will not be fun in the wet!

With rumours of a heatwave next week I have everything crossed it lasts until the 22nd. If the sun shines this will be a beautiful ride. Full details below:

Start - Orton meet at 9:20, ride to set off at 9:30.

Route - 106km/63miles - including Great Dun Fell and Hartside https://www.strava.com/routes/12580214

Stop - The cafe at the top of Hartside has apparently burnt down so we will descend Hartside and stop at Melmersby for a late lunch before riding back to Orton.

Finish - 3:30/4:00 - may only be 60miles but with the climbing prepare for a full day out.

Meet in Orton (about 3 miles away from the M6 Tebay junction), I have had a scout about and there is no parking of note but lots of roadside parking on the B6260 just as you get to the village, if you can lift share please do its a small village let's try not to fill it full of cars. Meet up outside The George pub.

Please ensure you have enough to be self sufficient, there arent loads of shops etc up there and we won't be stopping until 3/4 of the way round so have food/gels etc. Also be aware that the weather can change suddenly and at the top of the climbs it can be breezy and cold so an extra layer or two is recommended. Pace - the two climbs you can do at your own pace the rest we ride as a group, if there is a lot of interest we will split it into an A and B ride, if it is one group then we will keep it together. However note even when not on the two big climbs there is no real flat so this will test your spring form. If you have a GPS then please download the route, so we have a backup etc if needed.

Sorry guys I am going to call this off. Yellow weather warning ⚠️ all night with poss flooding. Then a low chance of rain all morning. Gutted as I sit here in 20 degree sunshine but it’s not worth it esp with the descents.
